Glo Overtakes MTN, Airtel and Others in Data Subscribers’ Growth

According to a recent report published by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the grandmaster of data Globacom has overtaken its major competitors MTN and Airtel in terms of the number of data subscribers.

The report which was released at the end of May 2020 revealed that Glo outperforms its competitors, gaining an impressive 8.302 million data subscribers which now gives the company a total of 37.236 million data subscribers.

Glo grew from 28.934 million in December 2019 to 37.236 million in May 2020 while its competitors, MTN gained 4.75 million data subscribers, Airtel, which used to be the second-highest in data subscribers after MTN, recorded 2.795 million within the same period.

9mobile, on the other hand, happens to be the biggest loser. The company continues to lose subscribers and this time, it lost 812,827 subscribers within the same period.

Glo was able to outperform the two-largest network due to the lockdown imposed on the economy and more subscribers migrated to the network for data service.

During the lockdown period, MTN attracted 689,593 subscribers and Airtel saw 41,791 new subscribers. The spike in Glo subscribers came in March and April (at the Peak of the Coronavirus lockdown), Glo gained 2.072 million new data subscribers.

While every other telecom company are still on the winning side, 9mobile constantly losing subscribers is a bit disturbing. The company should learn from its competitors and find a way to grow its network
