Back in December 2016, the popular social media WhatsApp ended support for some smartphones including Android devices running Android 2.2 and below. Now, however, the tech giant Google will be following suit by dropping support for Android 4.1 to Android 4.3 jellybean.
So, if you’re still on the Android Jellybean operating system? Unfortunately, soonest you won’t be able to use Google Chrome on your device.
According to an XDA developer, after some digging through the most recent version of Chrome app, he found some commit which leads us to believe that sooner or later, Google Chrome will no longer Support Android devices running Android 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3.
Based on Android’s distribution numbers, there are about 32 million Android devices still on Jellybean. Meaning 3.2% of Android devices are still on a version of Jellybean out of over 1 billion Android devices.
At the moment, Google Chrome can be installed from Google playstore on Android 4.1 and above; this is why it is always advisable for OEM’s to always release updates required for an upgrade on their devices.
However, the tech giant itself has not made any official statement regarding this update and there’s no timeline to when Google is going to pull the plug on Jellybean and Chrome, but it might be sooner than you think.
So, if you’re not running the most recent Android OS, make sure to upgrade your OS. And if your device has no official update to any of the most recent Android OS ( 4.4.2 KitKat and above), you can try custom Android ROMs.
