Motorola Announces A New foldable Razr Smartphone With 5G And Better Cameras

Motorola entered the foldable phone segment with its first-generation Motorola Razr last year, bringing back the iconic Razr clamshell flip phone into the smartphone space with what is now known as foldable hardware. The smartphone generated a lot of buzz in the smartphone space at the same time received criticism for its hardware, cameras and exorbitant price which many considered unacceptable.

To address many of the shortcomings of the first generation Razr foldable phone, Motorola has announced Razr 5G with a more durable design, a beefier SoC, a bigger battery, and an improved rear camera. The new Motorola Razr 5G looks almost the same as its predecessor, but comes with noticable changes in the build and design.

Motorola Razr 5G

The Motorola Razr 5G features a 6.2-inch 2142×876 plastic OLED main display and a 2.7-inch 800×600 Quick View glass OLED display, same as its predecessor. The primary display has a coating that protects it against accidental spills and splashes. The device uses Gorilla Glass protection and a matte finish on the rear. Motorola has also brought the fingerprint reader to the rear, now nestled inside the Moto Batwing logo.

For the hinges, Motorola used stainless steel and the tapered chin is made out of 7000 Series Aluminum Alloy. The company claims the hinge of the Razr 5G can withstand up to 200,000 flips. Also, there are metal support plates that provide a flat surface and tension to make the display feel sturdy while also being able to shift to give space for the teardrop display.

The Motorola Razr 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. That Snapdragon 765G comes with integrated modem (Qualcomm Snapdragon X52) which allows the Motorola Razr 5G to support sub-6GHz 5G networks, and it packs 4 antennas throughout its body. While the first generation Razr only came with support for eSIM only, the Razr 5G brings support for both eSIM and a traditional nanoSIM.

As for the cameras, Motorola has opted for a 48MP sensor with OIS and a ToF sensor for advanced laser autofocus and there is a 20MP selfie snapper. Motorola also introduce a brand new camera app (called Moto Camera 3.0) with the Razr 5G, the camera includes unique features designed to take advantage of the Quick View display. Some of those features include camera cartoon, Instant Review and External Preview. The new Moto Camera 3.0 app will be available on future devices from the brand.

What the new camera features do:

  • Camera cartoon: Lets you play an animation on the Quick View display to keep the subject focused
  • Instant Review: Shows a preview of the photo on the Quick View display so you can quickly see selfies without flipping the phone open
  • External Preview: Mirrors the viewfinder on the Quick View display so subjects can see their photo before it’s taken.

The Razr 5G runs a near-stock version of Android 10 with several software customization options via Motorola’s My UX app. Motorola says all improvements that came to the first-gen Motorola Razr with its Android 10 update will also be available on the new Motorola Razr 5G.

Also, the software on the Quick View display now shows a nav bar at the bottom, giving users the ability to swipe right to access the camera, swipe left to access favourite contacts and an app tray. Motorola says they preselected 8 apps to appear in the app tray, but they’re giving users the option to add any app of their choice.

Keep in mind that not all apps are optimized for the Quick View display’s 4:3 aspect ratio and low 800×600 resolution, but Motorola says they collaborated with Google to ensure their apps work well on the Quick View display.

Now to the battery, the Motorola Razr 5G houses a larger 2,800mAh battery (a 288mAh increase from its predecessor) with support for 15W fast charge.

The company also confirmed 2 major Android OS updates and 2 years of bi-monthly security updates for the Razr 5G.
